The movie Chicago, is already getting all the buzz. It is the front runner for an 8 awards. USA today says it is a slam dunk because "it harks back to the old Hollywood."
Disco DJ legend, Ron Joseph AKA RJ, has recently gone national with his Friday night "Disco USA." The radio show, now extends to stations as far away as California. In NJ / PA he can be heard on oldies station WVLT -FM 92.1
He brings back that era every Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00PM.
Make it a great year,
Ron
"A look back at 2002"
The disco roller coaster is ending 2002 on a high.
Looking back, there were many highlights. The dance community hit some great stride and received positive recognition from the media, on many occasions:
*Mega Radio station, owned by Clear Channel, held a major weekly Hustle dance contest in Florida. This was promoted on radio and newsprint. With it's success lets hope it carries over to other markets where Clear Channel owns additional radio stations. The finals featured a concert by Gloria Gaynor & the Sugar Hill Gang, special MC Deney Terio, and winners Noel Colon & Carmen Mendez received the $5,000 1st prize.
* Miquel Marrero, professional dance competitor, was badly hurt as he fell victim of a hit and run car accident. Surgery and recuperation will keep him out of dancing for most of 2003.
* We saw Lisa Nunziella return to the hustle floor at the World Hustle Dance Championships, where Ralph Lew was honored with a life time achievement award.
* "Paul Pellicora on Tango," hit the book stores. Paul Pellicora, owner and operator of Dancesport Dance Studio in NY, writes his first book to rave reviews.
* Arte Phillips choregraphs an outstanding dance show for Discoamerica, reciving a standing ovation.
*The NBC televised "Today Show" featured a special tribute to the classic movie,
Saturday Night Fever. Marking its 25th anniversary, a hustle dance contest was held live on TV crowning Laura Cozik and Erik Novoa.
*The Philadelphia Daily News did a full spread article on Hustle dancing and featured interviews and pictures from dance club, Michael's Cafe, in Bensalem Pa.
* The Opening of The Disco Exhibit: The Music, The People, The Phenomenon, at the Experience Music Project Museum, in Seattle, Washington.
* Special recognition to Franc "Perico" Reyes on the release of his full length feature film, "Empire." Not only an incredible writer / director he is an accomplished dancer.
* Hooked on Hustle debuts and gets covered by television station WB in Philadelphia. Local news dedicates time to discussing the hustle and the new found interest in dancing.
We lost some dear and admired dancers this year. These young dancers will be missed by the dance community.
Lets keep their memories in our hearts.

It has been announced that Arsenial Hall will host the 2003 Star Search television show starting on Jan. 8, 2003, Wednesday nights on CBS.
The Broadway musical "Chicago" just celebrated its 2,500th performance. This is right on the heals of the big blockbuster movie opening Dec. 27th. With the overwhelming success of "Moulin Rouge" last year, this should pave the way for more big screen adaptations.
Rob Marshall, directed Annie on TV, choreographed. Madonna, was originally cast along with Goldie Hawn - but both dropped out. Rene'e Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones (starred in Annie and 42nd Street) CO-lead the way. This could start the new era of big movie musicals. Discussions are moving towards remakes of "Guys & Dolls," a "Grease 3" with Travolta and Newton-John and a big screen version of "Contact."
When interviewed about his new film, Empire Franc. "Perico" Reyes responds with powerful words, from his heart.
Should there be more focused on the Hispanic community?
...If I made a film with a 100% Latino cast, I wouldn't be true to myself and what my life is all about. Art imitating life. Having said that, it also applies the other way. If I made a film with a 100% African American or Caucasian cast, the truth wouldn't be there either. There isn't a story that exists that Latinos along with every other culture can't tell. My cast will always include Latinos because that's who I am. But I live in a wonderful world of cultures and I hope my films will always reflect that.
Make it a great holiday week.

Disco, from a different generation
Music is a driving force. It shapes movies, motivates dancing and can pump up our every day lives. The success of the hustle was supported by a wonderful new sound. Many old and new artists contributed to this fresh change of beat. Some of the greatest hits from the Disco era came from those performers that were from an earlier generation.
Our parents listened to many of these artists yet they adapted to the current sound and blew us away with these didees. These respected artists helped bridge the musical generation gap. Here are some of those Classics.
Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. - Shine on Silver Moon
Herb Albert - Manhattan Melody / Rise
Paul Anka - Make It Up To Me In Love
Charo - Dance A Little Bit Closer (With Vince Montana Jr. / Salsoul Orchestra)
Frankie Crocker - Disco Suite
Maynard Ferguson - Primal Screams (Pagliaci)
Andre Gagnon - Wow
Astrid Gilberto - The Girl From Ipenema
Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
Patti LaBelle - Music Is my Life
Herbie Mann - Discotheque / Hi-Jack
Johnnie Mathis - Begin The Beguine / Gone, Gone,Gone
T.S.Monk - Candidate For Love
Peter Nero - Summer Of '42
Royal Philharmonic - Hooked On Classics
Doc Severnsen Night Journey
Frank Sinatra Night & Day
Andy Williams - Where Do I Begin (Theme From Love Story)
"Hooked on Hustle"
Channel 17, the WB - WPHL
Shannon Johnson hooked Philly on the Hustle.
Hooked On Hustle, was her first time, organizing a hustle event but without question, Philly will be dancing in the streets.
Television station WB, WPHL - 17 covered this wonderful evening of Hustle / Salsa & free style dancing. The live broadcast highlighted dancers and spoke with many of the pros on hand.
A great mix of new and old hustle fans attended this fun event.
Guests were treated to wonderful exhibitions of some of today's finest.
Dara Patrusky partnered with Dave Muzii and Ernesto Diaz, demonstrating the WCS. Diane Nardone performed a combo WCS and Hustle with DJ Dave Muzii. Salsa teachers, from the Atrium Dance Center, Darlin Garcia & Mirka Ibarrando wowed the audience with a sassy salsa and show stoppers, Brian and Silvana Gallagher, performed a theatrical hustle routine.
An open hustle jack and Jill contest put the contestants dance skills to the test.
In the winners circle:
1) Joey Cammatuci & Hyunki Raab
2) Joe Reggi & Mimi Doi
3) Tim & Jenn Nikita
A number of instructors were on hand to show their support and assist with promotions, judging the competition and workshops. Ken Roesel, Barbara Capaldi, Donna Boyle, Ernesto Diaz, Brian & Silvana Gallagher, Delvin & Mirka, Dara Patrusky, Andre' Phelps, Dave Muzii, Diane Nardone, Laura Bennett, DJ Kenny Arditi.
The evening made it possible for new friends to experience the hustle and to benefit
the charity HOPE Worldwide (www.hopeww.org)
Plans are in the works for another Hooked On Hustle event in March.
Stay tuned for more info.

Happy birthday to Carol "CK" Kalish.
Thank you to all those who attended this past Sunday's "Holiday Spectacular."
It truly was spectacular. See below for a complete Review.
Is there anything he can't do? In the 70's & 80's he ruled the hustle dance floor, in the 90's he wrote some of the top dance songs on the charts and now he wrote and directed his first motion picture. Franc."Perico" Reyes is unstoppable.
Bravo, check below for more info.

BUFFALO, NY (2002-11-29) Buffalo is officially part of disco history. A new exhibit at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington features footage and memorabilia from the 1970's Buffalo disco TV show, "Disco-Step-By-Step." Marty Angelo had no idea how popular disco would become when he first launched the Disco-Step-By-Step TV show here in the 1970s. In Buffalo, and cities all over the world, disco became a cultural phenomenon. The $5 billion a year industry has now been showcased in a new exhibit at Seattle's famous "Experience Music Project." Angelo was there last week for the opening. He says Buffalo is featured prominently in this recreation of the Disco era.
Angelo says more than 1,500 people attended the opening party. Angelo says the opening was such a success that the museum is talking about taking disco on the road once the exhibit closes in May.
And the disco craze is stayin' alive here in Buffalo, too. The "World's Largest Disco" will be held Saturday night at the Buffalo Convention Center for the 23rd year running.
Make it a great week.

"Holiday Spectacular"
Review
Without question, one of the biggest, one day gatherings for hustle dancing anywhere. The evening was incredible.
Scheduled till 12:30PM the dancing didn't stop until 1:30PM.
Thanks to our devoted DJ's for keeping the music rocking all night long - Billy from Philly, Dave Moldover, Johnny "O" and Bobby Morales.
The evening was non-stop dancing. With dancers attending from seven different states, our 10th annual "Holiday Spectacular" was an overwhelming success. Once again, the friendliest, talented, fashionably dressed group bar none.
Our Jack and Jill (open) dance contest had 12 couples dancing up a storm. The three winning teams received cash prizes.
Ist Place Steve Salerno and Joan Dudley - also received a day pass to DiscoAmerica
2nd place Joe Kernan and Angela McCabe
3rd place Chris Bates and Diane Danyo
Donna Boyle and Danny McGee performed their new routine which they won 1st place last month at the Kings Ball in Staten Island. Donna & Danny also were the recipients of the James Garcia award.
Brian and Stephanie Fortuna (From Fortuna's Universal Dancesport Center) had the audience mesmerized as they performed their Rumba, Cha Cha and Paso Doble routines.
We were fortunate to have so many professionals and instructors in attendance.
(I hope I don't leave anyone out, but my head is still spinning)
Sandy & Andy Fortuna, Bill Poulter, Arte Phillips, Debbie Tuttle, Silvana Gallagher, Ken Roesel, Donna Reinhart, Andre' Phelps, Brian Gallagher, Dara Patrusky,
Jose Gonzales, Debbie Ferro, John Marisa, Carl Charles and Tiffany Brown.
Thanks to everyone for their unwavering support.
Empire Rocks,
The premier for Empire, was held at the Kipps Bay Theater in NYC. Some of the major stars of the film were in attendance (John Leguizamo, Delilah Cotto, Sonia Braga, Fat Joe and Treach). Many other character actors, celebrities and friends were also on hand to view the film and praise Perico. From the hustle community, Sandra Rivera (former Dance Dimension), Stracy Diaz (who also appears in the film) Debbie & Ralph Ferro, Carlos Gonzales and Ricky Quintana. The energy level was extremely high and the theater quickly reached full capacity.
Franc. "Perico" Reyes, early in his career appeared on Dance Fever, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the Soap Factory Show among others, as he ruled the Disco Dance Floor.
For a complete over view of the movie please visit the web site.

"Retro"
These are the top 10 albums for the year 1978. National Disco Action, a division of Billboard Magazine posted these 24 years ago. The majority of these records have stood the test of time. All of these albums experienced multiple hits. They still enjoy some classic air play and are a staple in most DJ's arsenal of music.
This time period, the late 70's, marked the European dance sound invasion.
Great memories.
1) Voyage
2) Romeo & Juliet - Alec R. Costandinos
3) Come into my heart - USA -European Connection
4) Macho Man/ - Village People
5) If my friends could see me now - Linda Clifford
6) Dance With Me - Peter Brown
7) Let's All Chant - Michael Zager Band
8) I Can't Stop The Rain - Eruption
9) Bionic Boogie - Greg Diamond
10) Gimme Some Lovin - Kongas

"You Can't Go Home Again"
An old friend recently greeted me at a night club. It was a very cold evening. We had not seen one another in almost eight years. It was as if, the cool wind had sent him our way. He had just gotten off work and took a chance popping into the local club. Bingo, he picked the right night. We have been friends since the 70's. In the mid 80's, we all got pulled in different directions as we moved on with careers and relationships. The music received a twist of punk and subsequently free style ruled the dance floors. He had stopped dancing once he married. His new wife was uncomfortable with the thought of him dancing with other ladies! She was not a dancer nor took an interest in it. After a number of years of marriage, just recently, the relationship dissolved (sound familiar yet). As a dancer, from back in the 70's, he is quick to notice all the changes. The club was energized with about 60 active dancers. He commented on recognizing only a small number of dancers from back in the day? Where have all our old friends gone? We reminisce about many popular dancers: a few have relocated, some dancers still enjoy it but infrequently get out while others have dropped out. Personal and business priorities take us all on new paths. Before I knew it, his coat came off and he gravitated towards the dance floor. Within an hour he was looking very comfortable, dancing with new friends and rekindling old relationships. He was smiling laughing and having a great time. He had virtually come home again.
Back in the 40's, author Thomas Wolf wrote a chilling novel called "You can't go home again." I've always found my self relating to the theme of the book - returning to your past. Going to dance clubs for some, is more then just improving your dance and having fun. For many, it's a search - a small window into the past.
Separation and divorce can bring on high levels of anxiety. Some can even go into a depression, losing the desire and interest to move on. Wolf writes that "you cannot go home again." Sure, we cannot bring back the 70's & 80's, our childhood and the romantic dance era we enjoyed. But that's not to say one cannot evolve and adapt to the new dance, the music and faces.
By the end of the evening, my long time friend had a big dose of dancing, in the new millennium. It was heart warming to see the new dancers greet and embrace him with a dance.
Maybe it's this time of year? The holidays and the spirit of giving?
Were the "good old days" better?
I'm convinced most of us will look back and reflect on today as some of the best times of our lives.
Maybe you can go home again.

Happy birthday to Long Island's Bad Boy, Carl Charles and to Elise Alverado.
Holiday Spectacular Update: Last edition, I announced, at our 10th Anniversary Holiday Dance (December 15th, Sunday at Degenhardts), we would have a dance exhibition by Brian Fortuna and Stephanie Poulteria. Well, not only will they perform but they will be husband and wife.
Congratulations to the entire Fortuna Family.
Hats off to Norma Rivera.
This past week she won MS NEW YORK WOMAN BELLEZA LATINA 2003, which in Spanish means "Beautiful Latin Woman." She is the current Mrs. NY 2002 and a wonderful dancer.
It appears to be a bleak future for the Stardust Ballroom in Pennsauken, NJ?
A 6,400-seat arena and conference center will be built in Pennsauken by the Camden County Improvement Authority. The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority is expected to approve a grant which the county freeholders would vote on to select the site at their December meeting. The Stardust sits square center of the planned arena. For years the Ballroom has attracted dancers from all over the tri-state area for socials, Salsa dancing and dance classes. Many will remember the Stardust as the location we held "Ginger's Wish - Fundraiser and Dance" for Virginia DiMaio.
The civic center site is part of a 534-acre redevelopment zone in Pennsauken in which the township has the power to condemn and sell property. Should the project get the green light, ground breaking could happen in less then six months.
Where were you 30 years ago? Please enjoy this weeks Spot Light on the fabulous Carol Famigletti. One of the first hustle dancers on the scene.

"Spot Light"
Carol Famigletti
Five years, before John Travolta strutted his stuff, in his 3 piece white suit, a young dancer was already doing the "hustle." Her talented group of friends hung at the night clubs creating these early steps. "We invented the dance as we went along."
Carol Famigletti, was one of the early dancers on the scene. Thirty years ago, along with good friend Annette Rivera, they would frequent the hot dance clubs in the city: Roseland, Copa and the Cork & Bottle.
The dance was brand spanking new. At the time, there were no hustle classes to take, self help videos to learn from or hustle dance shows to watch.
Carol's circle of friends, encompassed some of the legends of our dance.
For the next five years, Carol would partner with Danny Llaurado. (Danny's original partner, Linda Rodriques would go on to tour with The Andrea True Connection - "More More More"). Along with Annette and her partner Floyd Chisholm, they formed an exciting dance troop. Well known manager/agent, Don DeNatalie took the troop under his wings. These young dancers would begin to travel and perform all over. The Disco craze was just starting to heat up. Floyd and Annette were selected as the lead dancers for the Motion Picture "Roseland." (This trilogy focused on ballroom dancing and exposed the early stages of hustle, featuring a dance contest.)
The dance troop, now known as "The Disco Dance Connection," was booked to perform in Paris. Along with Carol & Danny, Eddie Espinosa with his partner Barbara would tour Paris for a month. Dancing to hot songs like, "Don't Let me be Misunderstood" and "Magic Bird Of Fire," each couple had their own unique style.
The troop would go thru multiple changes. Eddie would soon team up with the beautiful Gina Figueroa and Ricky Quintana and Lee Rafrano came on board.
Each of these teams would eventually represent New York on the celebrated TV show, "Dance Fever."
The Dance Troop was in demand. They would be booked six nights a week at the premier New York Supper Clubs. The shows would feature four couples performing: group numbers, solo spot light dances along with two female singers. In addition to competing in contests, Carol and Danny would dance back up for Pop singer Patrick Hernandez (Born to Be Alive) and perform on weekends at Plato's Retreat.
With so many dance opportunities out there, the troop members would continue to be pulled in different directions. "The amazing Annette Rivera left the troop and Floyd began to partner with Nellie Cotta."
The troop would continue to evolve. Deano "Dino" Georgio with partner Jean Camaletti joined the troop next.
Like all great things, the end was not far away. "We went to the clubs at midnight and danced till four AM. It was time to move on." I needed to settle down," recalls Carol.
Danny would continue to perform with new partner Maria Torres. "We parted on good terms, I even gave Danny all of my costumes. We had such great times together, memories that I will always cherish," remembers Carol. "Dancing was everything to me, it was a major part of my life."
Since those early days of dancing, Carol helped lay down the ground work for the hustle dancer's of today. She is still best friends with Jean Camaletti and Michael Babbino. "Michael and I have been friends for 30 years, he hung out with us and helped keep us organized, Michael was a doll."
As a school teacher in Long Island, NY, Carol recently celebrated her 19th wedding anniversary. She has a 13 year old daughter, Amanda. It shouldn't surprise you that her daughter has been studying dance for 10 years. "Wow I wonder where she got that from" reflects Carol.
Will Amanda move onto the hustle? Carol is a testament to the dancers of today. With her ingenuity and creativity she was one of the early dancers to help shape our dance. Under her guidance, Amanda maybe the next dancing Diva.
Stay tuned.

"Holiday Spectacular"
Dance Party
Ten years ago, the hustle scene was looking bleak. Many of our favorite dance clubs had gone by the way side: some shuttered others changed to a non dance format. We decided, it was important to maintain the interest in the hustle and help keep our circle of friends united. In 1992, Susan Fisher, Donna Boyle and Ron Bess launched our first Holiday Dance. It stated at "Bumpers Night Club," located in the Radisson Hotel (in Bensalem Pa). With great local support we continued to hold this annual event. A few years later, Susan reluctantly moved to Florida. Thru the years, many new smiling faces have joined our dance community. As the event grew we changed the location and Disc Jockeys. One thing that has stayed consistent is the fun loving, friendly dancers that attend our holiday party. What started as a local Philly / NJ social has now expanded to dancers attending from as far away as Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Delaware and New York (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, Long Island).
You, are cordially invited to attend our tenth annual Holiday Spectacular. Just like we did 10 years ago, we will hold a Jack & Jill dance contest. (The winners will receive a complimentary Day pass to Donna Boyle's "Disco America 2003."). We return to Degenhardts in Mount Ephraim. They have the largest dance floor in the area.
We are honored to have Brian Fortuna and his new partner Stephanie Pouliot perform for you. Great music (Disco, Salsa, Swing, WCS) finger food, a Dance Jam, guest DJs, free parking and wonderful dancing all night long. Dress to impress. Admission is still only $15 per person.
We hope you can join us, as we continue to provide this one special night of dancing for our friends.
Happy Holidays
Ron & Donna
"DR Disco"
We all look forward to that special night of dancing.
The frequency of locations and the selection of nights for dancing has diminished. The disruption of missing a night can be disappointing. What do you do when a cold or the flu sets in?
Do you take that chance and go dancing at the risk of compounding your condition? You really need you dance fix, but is it safe to dance when your under the weather?
The general rule of thumb.
If you have "above-the-neck" symptoms, including a sore throat, stuffy nose and sneezing: light social dancing is fine. Avoid over extending your self and stop if you feel your condition getting worse.
If your condition is classified as "below-the-neck," with symptoms such as vomiting,
diarrhea and/or a high fever (100 degrees and above), muscle aches, chills: you should take the night off. If you over exert yourself, in this condition, you will become sick from dehydration and this can even lead to heat stroke. It's recommended to recover first, then gradually ease back in.

"One Hit Wonders"
Billboard Magazine tracks those artists that have had one song place on the top POP 40 list but were unable to do it again. This is not to suggest that they aren't still writing music but only that they have failed to strike gold twice.
I have listed those musicians that are the one hit wonders in the Dance Music category during the 80's.
* Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Hooked on Classics - 1982
* SOS Band - Take Your Time - 1980
* Lipps Inc. - Funky Town - 1980
* Taco - Puttin on The Ritz - 1983
* Shannon - Let the Music Play - 1984
* Limahl - Never Ending Story - 1985
"Retro"
At the peak of the disco craze, hustle dancers flocked to the clubs to dance and be seen. The newest clubs were huge, plush and Xciting. Studio 54 was for the stars, dancers wanted to hustle. Bonds, Coconuts, The Red Parrot, Emerald City,
Faces, Pete & Lenny's, Inferno, Level 3, Library, Disco 79, Pulsation's, Lime Light,
In Palisades Park, NJ, a former soap factory, was converted into a night club.
Not only a high tech dance club, they televised a weekly dance show. The producers were always on the look out for cutting edge performers, crazy costumes, lots of skin and superb dancers. The show would feature national recording acts along with a weekly dance lesson with Jeff and Donna Shelley. In addition, the show would feature dance exhibitions. Miquel Marrero and Annette, Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau, Frank "Perico" Reyes & Debbie Ferro with Billy Fajardo & Sandra Rivera (the Disco Dance Dimension) were spot lighted on the show.
One memorable "Soap Factory" show was dedicated to the finals of a national Dance Contest.
In 1978, Phil Gary organized a national disco competition. Preliminary contests were held all over the USA. Local winners went to 7 regional finals. Ultimately, they were flown into NJ to compete on The Soap Factory for the finals. The judges: Kay Conners and Douglas Clark were from Fred Astaire studios, Henry Dior was with Dale Dance Studios and Marilyn Green Fisher was head of Top Disco DJs.
The seven final couples performed at Roseland the night before the TV taping. Representing "Club Max" in Boston was Richard & Kathy. From "The Sports Page" in California was Gary & Barbara, from the "Deju Vue" Disco in Texas was Rene & Paula, from "Broadway Disco" in Michigan was Mike & Cindy and in 2nd place ($2,000) was Vicki & Doug from "The Plumb" Disco in Washington DC, in first place ($3,000) was Donald & Debbie from "Xanadu" Disco in Florida and the winners ($5,000) represented the "Copa Cabana" in New York. The competitors couldn't out shine the incomparable Tony & Susan Marolda.
The contest was simulcast on radio station WBLS. Tony and Susan were then eligible to compete in London at the World Championships.
Like all good things, the smoke stack was eventually capped, soap bubbles were canned and the factory was shuttered. That was the end of an important chapter in the Disco Archives.

"Dance Review"
A High energy dance review is performing at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ until November 28th.
"Fercos - Untamed Illusions" combines magic, dance and mystery in this Ziegfield & Roy style show. But, you don't have to travel to Vegas to see it.
Lead dancer, Jose Gonzalez, demonstrates his jazz, partnering skills and "old school" dance style. Jose, a Philadelphia product, has been performing and choreographing at the Casino's for the last 15 years. Back in the 70's, he single handedly dominated the hustle scene in Philly/Southern, NJ. Regardless of who his partner was (Angie, Susan, Donna, Marcie or Rocki) he always was in the winners circle. Jose was part of the legendary Merv Griffin Show, for the promotional roll out of the Motion picture, "Thank God It's Friday." This televised dance contest gave birth to the syndicated "Dance Fever" show. He was a semi finalist in the New York Harvest Moonball and competed in Los Angeles on Dance Fever. Jose has performed on stages thru out the Northeast. He has always been lionized by his fellow dancers. Friendly and always helpful with a dance step or maneuver. Check out Jose with his patented "smile" and the wonderful cast at The Tropicana show, Fercos - Untamed Illusions. It is family oriented and very affordable. For more information call. 1-800-526-2935, you wount be disappointed.

Fitness has become a big part of the American life style. Today, along with Dancing, there are so many types of exercise programs to take part in. It seems, every few months, a new program "Du jour" pops up. In our fast paced society, what is In today, could be out tomorrow.
Stepper classes, Pilates, blading, Yoga, Kwando, Boxing, Tae-Bo, all provide excellent cardiovascular exercise as well as strength and flexibility.
Whether your running on a tread mill or pedaling a stationary bike, your get a good workout but there is a hot new trend on the horizon with a dance overtone.
Belly dancing.
Many of today's entertainers have helped give this ancient dance a boost. Shakira and Brittany Spears have included this form of dance in their videos and live performances. Donna Boyle, dance teacher and organizer of Disco America, has been performing and teaching belly dancing for years.
This is not the belly dancing of old: seductive young harem girls entertaining Arab sheiks. Performed thousands of years ago in the Middleast, it doesn't require years of training. Since the 9-11 attacks, many Americans have been seeking knowledge on Mid eastern society. This has revived and interest among young and old. The Middle eastern Culture and Dance Association says membership has grown more then 30% over the last year.
So, if your looking for a new form of exercise, prefer the feel of dance and want to rotate your pelvis, check out a Belly dancing class near you. I'm sure work out video tapes will soon follow.

"Spot Light Update"
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of writing a Spot Light on the multi talented Franc "Perico" Reyes. His new movie release will rock the theaters this December.
Franc was one of the early pioneers of hustle dancing. Along with Billy Fajardo, they formed the legendary dance troupe, "The Disco Dance Dimensions." He teamed up with dance partner extrodinaire, Debbie Ferro (AKA Rosado). They performed with the D.D.D. at the Grand Opening of "Studio 54" and on many TV shows including Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and The Soap Factory. Franc continued to perform and danced with various partners and was a semi finalist on the hit TV show "Dance Fever." In search of more challenges, he put his talents to the test choreographing for major entertainers. Working closely in the music industry he composed a hit song for Corina. In 1990, "Just waiting for you" hit the charts. This was followed up by another Franc original, "Together for Ever," performed by Lisette Melendez. In 1991 he wrote the highest charting free style song ever recorded, "Temptation," also performed by Corina. His artistic creativity then carried over to writing two screen plays, "Headliners" and "In the Deep South"
We are very proud to announce that the move "Empire," will be playing in theaters starting December 6th, 2002. Franc is the writer and director. The movie trailer is now being featured at theaters everywhere.
From the hustle to the Silver screen.
We'll keep you posted on the opening night extravaganza and his continued success.

"Saturday Night Fever returns"
The NBC televised "Today Show" featured a special tribute to the classic movie, Saturday Night Fever. Marking its 25th anniversary, since the original theatrical release, it is now available on DVD. The disco theme morning show included a special Dance Contest. Like a spin off of the Dance Fever Show, former Host, Deney Terrio was on hand along with the original Trammps (there is a younger group using the same name) performed "Disco Inferno" and K.C. and the Sunshine Band performed "Boogie Man." The high light of the show was the Disco Dance Off.
Some of NY's finest shaked their groove thing. Erik Novoa and Laura Cozik got the honors of dancing first. The show is live and unfortunately, there was technical difficulties. Viewers at home heard, Earth Wind and Fires "Boogie Wonderland," but there was no sound on the set. Erik and Laura pulled it off, dancing to the sound of rain drops (the show must go on) and took home the huge first place trophy and tickets to Cabaret.
Each couple had 60 seconds to impress the judges. The panel, was more interested in "how tight their pants" were and the colors of their outfits as opposed to their dance skills. But, everyone seemed to have fun. Bobby Morales and Jami Josephson danced to Chic's "Freak" and Susan Fritz and partner Jerry performed to "Turn The Beat Around," by the late Vicki Sue Robinson.
The TV show is watched weekly by millions of viewers. I'm confident that this will attract new interest. This is a high profile show with loyal viewers. I see this as a big win for the Hustle community. This is probably the best public exposure the hustle has received in a while. The dancers clearly lifted the stigma by bringing viewers up to date on the Hustle. Many folks think of the hustle as either a line dance or just some bump and grind movements. All three couples reflected a fun, youthful dance style that should help boost new interest. Way to go.
KC has a new CD coming out called "I'll be there for you" he has also written a new book which will take you thru the years of his band. Both KC and the Trammps continue to travel and perform. * For the record*, the show picked the music not the dancers. I feel better now.
Need a dose of new dance music. Check out some of these tunes.
"Purple God" by Anny
"Easy" by Groove Armada
"Sleep" by Conjure one
"Gentle Rain" by Black watch & Greed
"This is your life" by MT Rushmore
"Ordinary world" by Aurora
"Seve the ego" by Jewel
"Gotta get thru this" by Daniel Bedingfield
New releases from Jennifer Lopez - Jenny from the block and Deborah Cox - Mr. Lonely, coming out next month.

Twenty-seven years ago, the sound was different. Vinyl records ruled.
The dance sound was growing and Disco was becoming a house hold word.
The radio stations played, Disco, under the guise of funk, R & B and top 40.
Many artists were crossing over from Rock, jazz and even country.
In the year 1975, these were the songs that ruled the radio air waves in Los Angeles.
1) Fly Robin Fly - Silver Convention
2) Thats the way I like it - K.C. and the sunshine Band
3) Love machine - The Miracles
4) Peace Pipe - B.T. Express
5) Change with the times - Van McCoy
6) Love to Love you Baby - Donna Summer
7) Messin with my mind - LaBelle

"Book Review"
If you've been to Dancesport on a Monday evening, you've experienced the best night out for hustle dancing. Dancers from far and near come to watch and develop their craft. One of the early hustle pioneers hangs his hat there. Paul Pellicoro, owner and operator.
Along with his 15 year partner, Eleny Fotinos, he runs the largest dance studio in NYC. Paul has judged and taught at many of the hustle events and promotions over the last three decades including: World Hustle Dance Championships, Disco America, Hustle USA, IHSC....
Although he started as a hustle dancer, he expanded his horizons mastering 15 other dances. He is recognized as one of the best known teachers of international Argentina Tango. Paul describes the tango as "the ultimate lead - follow dance. Both young and old are passionate about the Tango." Paul started teaching after he was recruited by the Arthur Murray studios in NYC. As the hustle gained ground, studios were anxious to roll out classes. Paul was known for his dance skills and the ability to break down the dance. They quickly tapped into his knowledge. In 1985, Paul stepped out and opened his own studio on Broadway. With a wonderful following, Dancesport studio took off. Recognized as the "Teacher of the Stars," he has coached the likes of Kim Alexis, Jennifer Aniston, Helen Gurley Brown, Matt Dillon,
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Richard Gere (performing in the soon to be released movie "Chicago"), Sally Kirkland, John Leguizamo, Mira Sorvino, just to mention a few.
Paul's choreography is best captured on film with Pacino's performance in "Scent of a Woman." It's an incredibly exciting sequence. Two years in the making, "Paul Pellicoro on Tango," the book, is captivating. Like the hustle, the tango is very expressive. He takes you thru the history of tango and his attraction to this refined dance. But, it doesn't stop there. Not just a technical - instructional book on tango, (sure he covers the eight count basic) but gives his readers insight on the music, proper clothing, in-depth interviews with the legends of Tango and a guide to where to go dancing.
Paul's true gift is the technique he has developed for teaching. His body of work includes the films: Autumn in New York, Let it be Me, A River Runs through it, Straight Talk, Summer of Sam, Flawless and others.
As one of the worlds best known teachers, right from the get go, you will immediately experience his sensitive style in the beautifully written tribute to his partner Eleny. His writing technique makes this a pleasure to read I found myself unable to put it down. Paul continues to inspire others to embrace tango dancing. "Like the hustle, the dance continues to evolve." His book is a must read for all lovers of dance. At a recent book signing at Barnes & Noble's (Lincoln Center), it was standing room only as the entire stock of his book sold out. Published by Barricade books, it is available where ever better books are sold.
Bravo Paul.
Letters to the Editor (we welcome your letters - Rowenlb22@aol.com)
Leaders: don't assume that you have to dance "down" to your less-advanced followers. Many, if not most, of us (especially if we are good followers with good frame and connection) are capable of dancing "up" -- and genuinely enjoy the opportunity to do so. You won't know if you don't try; at least give us the chance (and don't just a single advanced move -- you might want to try more than one to see if she follows you). Remember, too, that the object is to dance as a couple, so don't go for moves that would be impossible to follow without already knowing them. Lastly, encourage your followers -- don't discourage them.

"Letters to the editor"
Dear Ron,
I totally agree with letter #2. I am a middle-aged, single, working mother whose passion is dancing. Because I want to go beyond just dancing socially, I want to take lessons to improve what I already know. Perhaps even enter a competition as a novice to get the experience. Private lessons, it seems, are only for the elite who have large pocketbooks. They are hardly affordable! Group lessons are better, but you don't get the individual attention. I get totally frustrated because I can't seem to get beyond a certain level. Then when I do go out to practice, many people look past me because I am not at their level. Again, I am stuck in the level that I have attained. It is like a Catch-22. Any suggestions???
"Review"
Marty Angelo, from Disco Step by Step, was invited to attend the Paramount Pictures DVD Release Party, held at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood. Here is his hands on review of the evening.
Thank you Marty,
><
What started out as a party for six major Paramount Pictures movie releases
on DVD (Saturday Night Fever, Foot Loose, Flash Dance, Staying Alive, Urban
Cowboy, and Grease) turned into one big blast for just one, Grease! Even
though there were hundreds of former cast and crew members from all six
flicks, the main event was pure Grease. First Olivia Newton John took the
stage and sang her hit, "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the movie
soundtrack then John Travolta joined her on stage to sing a duet, "You're
the One that I Love". I almost forgot he could sing! They both sounded
great! Then the entire cast appeared on stage and sang the popular "Summer
Nights"
including rock legends, Frankie Avalon and Frankie Vally.
All the featured movies had huge banners draped all over Paramount's New
York City back lot. Paramount treated us all with open bars, classic 50s
automobiles, hostesses dressed in '50s garb, delicious food stands, and the
studio even had the mechanical riding bull from the movie, Urban Cowboy set
up for anyone who braved to give it a try. There were stars galore .. every
time we turned around a famous face would walk by leaving us questioning
"Isn't that.. from.. ?"
We were truly disappointed that Saturday Night Fever was not featured at
all. I was at least expecting Travolta to dance with his famous co-star,
Karen Lynn Gorney. But it seems like Paramount wanted Grease
and Grease
is what we got! Darn!
It is a shame that the cast from each movie was not even recognized from
the stage. Most of them were in attendance too! Not even a
mention.. other than the titles of each flick. But I guess that is
understandable seeing Paramount had so many DVDs coming out at the same
time. The studio picked its biggest and the one which offered the most
entertainment for the evening. But Paramount should have had separate
promotions for each film so each could get its' due respect.
I was standing in a crowd off to the side of the stage by the VIP section
when Frankie Avalon was asked by a security guard to move out of that
area. I saw what was happening and spoke up and asked the guard: "Do you
know who you are talking to?" The guard had a puzzled look on his face. I
said: "That is Frankie Avalon. THE Frankie Avalon! The man who was
singing and starring in music movies long before any of the stars you are
guarding was even born!" The guard backed off and let Frankie back into
the VIP area. I yelled out to Frankie.. "If it wasn't for you and your
generation of singers, films like Grease would never have been made!"
I still want to see a reunion hustle dance of Tony Manero and Stephanie
Mangano.
Please see website for some exciting photos.

I hope you enjoy this months "Spot Light" on Lee Rofrano. She has been out of the spot light but when she competed and performed, she was bright as day. See her bio below.

Lee Rofrano
As a young teenager, Lee would take the train from Brooklyn to Manhattan to frequent the high energy Discotheques. This started a journey, that would take her to the top rung of the disco ladder, but by age 19, she would walk away from it all.
At the young age of 15, Lee Rofrano met Ricky Quintana while dancing at Club Ipenema. "I would sneak on the train and get to the club before 11:00PM to beat the cover charge." Lee and Ricky's romantic relationship soon took a turn towards serious dance competition. Each was a gifted dancer but they had to synchronize their talents. They would rehearse at home then compete at local dance contests. "We won some and lost some." As they began to hone their skills they met Floyd Chisholm and Nellie Cotto. Floyd was putting together a dance troop and invited them to join forces. For three years, they would tour and perform with Floyd & Nellie, Eddie Espinosa & Gina Figueroa and Danny Llaurado & Carol Famigletti. "The group was the best, we really had a great time," Lee remembers.
All along, Lee and Ricky would continue to compete and perform. Their first television appearance was on New York's "Soul Alive" dance show. The show revolved around a weekly dance contest where couples, representing different NY/NJ clubs, battled for first place recognition.
Lee remembers, "a long TV taping and working under hot lights for hours. But it was a great learning experience."
After winning the preliminaries in NY, they were eligible to represent the big apple on the syndicated television show "Dance Fever." Only a year prior, their good friends, Floyd and Nellie shocked the country with their ground breaking hustle routine, which they performed on The Merv Griffin Show. Now, Ricky and Lee would add a page to that book and introduce classic adagio moves including: over head lifts, the back roll down and the magical snake maneuver. Her nude-style costume had the television staff biting their nails? They had her do a special dress rehearse before taping the hit show. "They were afraid something might pop out," a laughing Lee reminisce. Ultimately, they would win the first round and go onto the "Dance Fever" semi - finals.
After winning a prestigious contest at Regine's Night club in NY, they were selected to perform in the motion picture "Can't Stop the Music," featuring the Village People.
They also caught the eye of popular singer, Patrick Hernandez, and joined him on his tour to become his opening act. Hernandez was at the top of the charts with his hit single, "Born to be Alive." In addition, they performed weekends at "Plato's Retreat," an infamous Adult leisure club in the city.
But with four years into this non-stop dance world, Lee said good bye. "I didn't want to dance anymore." "Ricky had a life long goal to dance, this was his dream. I started dancing as a baby, I loved to dance but I slept late and danced all night for four years. I didn't want to do that the rest of my life."
Ricky would move on to new partners and stay active in the dance scene but Lee needed a change and moved back to Brooklyn, her home town.
Today, she recides in Staten Island and works for Cohen Brothers Real estate in the city. Two days before the attack on the world trade center, Lee was married (for the first time) in Las Vegas. Still friends with long time dancer Michael Babbino, she loves to look back on her greatest teenage memories, that of her dance years.
She was fortunate to rise to the top of her craft at only 17 years old - when the country was in a disco dance craze and the competition was at its peak.
Lee gets out to dance but reluctantly is not a regular. She really gets a thrill when someone spots her. "I remember the time I walked into Dancesport and Carl Charles exclaimed, look who is here, A blast from the past."
Truly one of the more exciting dancers, Lee, had a positive influence on many others to follow her. She helped introduce a new style of the hustle to dance enthusiasts all over the country. Her showmanship and dare devil moves literally took your breath away. She has left an indelible contribution on our dance and a warm impression in our hearts.
Letters to the Editor
Does anyone want "new blood" on the hustle floor? If they do, then many people need to change their dance floor manners. For two years, it hasn't changed much. It's still... I'm too good to sacrifice one or two dances with a beginner... This is a group thing... it takes a majority of friendly people in a crowd to win people
over. As it is... anyone who has come in for the past couple of years has
been subjected to a lot of disappointment.... men, too... I have recently
found men (new guys) asking me to dance and being overwhelmingly grateful if
I dance with them... due to their lack of opportunities to dance with anyone
but a beginner... I, too, have felt the need to show deep appreciation for
more advanced dancers to dance with me... In most cases, true leaders are
servants... except in Hustle, it seems. Whatever happened to the attitude
that from a male leader of "let me show everyone how good of a leader I am,
I'll dance with this beginner and show everyone that I can make her look
good..." and from the women... "let me practice dancing to any lead, even a
weak one... this will help me become a better follower..."
You know what would be fun... is more "jack and jill" contests --
-- that are geared for matching "excellent leaders" with new
followers.... This would be encouraging in all respects.

Feathers Dance Contest
Back in the day, the most exciting dance contests were held at some of the best discotheques in the country. Prizes could range from cold cash to exotic trips or even shiny new automobiles.
The night clubs that sponsored the contests typically would run preliminaries then bring the weekly winners back for the semi and/or final competition. The clubs would be packed. A contest was such a great draw and the atmosphere was just right:
The sound systems, lighting and special effects would create the ultimate setting.
These contests, in most cases, were open to anyone and pretty much had an anything goes policy.
One memorable contest took place in the summer of 1981, at the beautiful Feathers Disco in Long Island, NY. Each week the best couple qualified to return for the finals. These were some of the best couples in the country. The Silver Screen never witnessed the high energy provided by these teams. Their electrifying performances would still stand the test of time:
*Roma Moon and Joseph Harris danced to Salsoul's "It's good for the Soul"
*Lucas Jamie and Kathy Young chose the classic "Shine on Silver Moon".
*Ricky Quintana and Lee Rafrano danced to Melba Moores "Pick Me Up I'll Dance" *Derrick Allen and Lilia Parra performed to Meco's "Star Wars".
*George Valesquez shocked the crowd dancing to "Savage Lover" in full caveman attire
*Billy Fajardo and Sandra Rivera selected the theme from "Star Wars"
*Ralph Rameriz and Maria Gomez chose "Latin Odyssey" by Voyage
*Miquel Marrero and Annette performed to "In the Socket"
*Billy Assmus and Annabelle danced to "Fame".
And first place went to Eddie Vega and Laudes Jones as they performed effortlessly to "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure. The applause was deafening.

I tried to think of a situation in which I could relate being a competitor and also being social. I have also been an athlete all of my life, mostly a basketball player. I still play today, however, I no longer play in competitive leagues. There are times when I have played in highly competitive situations in various leagues and on this level the intensity is very high. By comparison I have also played socially or what would be called "pick up ball." At this level one does not play with the same intensity as in league competition, although, there are those who have difficulty differentiating this aspect of the sport. Over the years I have learned how to adjust my level of play for the nature, level of competition and corresponding level of talent in any pick up game. To me, a pick up game is purely about the enjoyment of the game and the value of the exercise. Sure you play to win in order to make the game interesting but not at all costs. Also, I would never, and I repeat NEVER tell someone that I wouldn't play with them because they weren't at my level. I would always bring the level of my game down to theirs, allowing it to remain competitive, so that they could have an opportunity to play, learn and grow. My game NEVER suffered because I was playing with someone who had less ability than I. If I never played with those at my own level then certainly it would begin to decline. I see dancing in a similar light. It takes a mature dancer to recognize the circumstances surrounding the environment of the dancing situation and adjust accordingly. By dancing with people of all levels we improve ourselves, grow as dancers and increase our circle of friends and acquaintances. I can only see positive things in dancing with everyone even in those situations when a few mishaps may occur for even these can be good teachers.

Hey Ron thanks for keeping me on top of all the dances news and events.
I wanted to respond to the on going question of how to attract more dancers to the hustle. My family .... and I have been in the Hi Fi Stereo business for over 20 years. Last year when I attended tha Atlanta Trade show the home entertainment division was committed to grow the DVD industry. At the time VCRs captured 80% of sales.
The manufactures understood to grow this diviison they would have to be competitive.
Va La, they dropped the price of DVD players and the cost of a DVD. The market has since then virtually flip flopped. They made it affordable. I gasp when I hear what the dance instructors are charging for a private lesson. These folks are shooting themselves in both feet and killing the interest of would be hustle dancers. If all these "professional" instructors really give a damm about getting new people involved they make it affordable. It's a joke. Now I'm sure people are going to say, well that's what the market bears, if they can get it. But really, how can a low income, college kids, young urban professionals afford a 55 minute lesson for the outragious prices they charge? My accountant that employs two secretaries has two college degrees and is certified in the state doesn't even charge that rate. And to the best of my knowledge I'm not sure if half of these "hustle" teachers have any formal training in teaching?
So who is really being hustled?
Make the classes affordable and they will come. I challenge some one to step up.
Thankyou for the chance to express myself.

Great article by DEBORAH SCHOENEMAN,
Maybe this is the start of a positive trend?
There are seven giant new dance clubs about to pump up the volume of New York's night life in the coming months.
September 19, 2002, -- BREAK out the dancing shoes - discos are coming back. In the next few months, so many cavernous clubs are opening it's practically "Saturday Night Fever" all over again. Between now and February, seven new dance emporiums are debuting below 28th Street. Club impresarios - mainly from outside New York - are betting a ton of money there's a ripe market for the re-incarnation of Studio 54, though you probably won't find Bianca Jagger - or even Jade - swinging from the rafters. Since the famed party headquarters fizzled, the disco scene has been anything but exclusive. At this time last year, small clubs like Pangaea, Butter and Go opened downtown - and all are still packed a year later. So why - with the weakened economy and the wake of the terrorist attacks - are there so many upcoming new venues that hold more than 1,000 people or more? Even party entrepreneurs are scratching their heads. "I think it's definitely surprising that so many are opening," says nightclub and restaurant publicist Ron Berkowitz. "Especially considering what we saw last year." Michael Ault, owner of downtown's 350-person successful lounge Pangaea, says "I think it's a very tough time to open a big club." During the past two decades, Ault was involved with most of the city's giant nightclubs, from Studio 54 to Chaos, but now he prefers packing a small house. "I wouldn't touch a big nightclub with a ten-foot pole," he adds. One reason so many cavernous clubs are opening is that many went out of business after Sept. 11 - like Limelight and Ohm, which are about to re-open after extensive renovations. Others delayed their openings last year, banking on a better economy this year. And some properties were scooped up for bargain prices. Midtown's Exit II, which opened last year with a $4 million DJ booth for celebrity resident DJ Junior Vasquez, has been raking in cash from crowds of 18-and-older bridge-and-tunnelers. They've already booked superstar Paul Oakenfeld for their New Year's Eve bash. Jason Strauss, a co-owner of Chelsea's popular Suite 16, says there's room for more clubs like Exit II. "There haven't been a lot of places to go dancing," says Strauss. "There's such a need for the big clubs that dominated a few years ago."

In response to your ongoing topic of the more experienced dancer being respectful to the less advanced people who would love to learn more by dancing with the best. I recently had an experience that was most rewarding. In a recent Jack and Jill competition on Long Island, there was one man short and they asked a more advanced dancer to join in just to fill in the gap. After random rotation, I had the pleasure of dancing with on of the greatest dancers of all times Mr. Derrick Allen. At first I was very intimidated, but after a few steps he encouraged me to do my best and to just enjoy myself and have fun. This was by far the most rewarding dance I have ever had with an experienced dancer. Not only did I treasure the opportunity (it was like dancing on air) but he later encouraged me even more by telling me to "keep dancing." This is what continues to make me want to learn more. Thank you "Derrick" for your kind words and encouragement.
By the way we came in 2nd Place! It made me feel great....

In 1976, one year before the release of Saturday Night Fever, the disco sound was still evolving. The music was fusing funk and soul. The Billboard "Hot Soul Singles" reflects mostly American performers at the time. In the years to come, the DJ's would import European dance music which would have a major impact on Disco. Extended instrumentals and the melodic orchestral tracks were on the horizon.
Twenty-six years ago, these were the top 10 songs played in the USA.
1) Shake Your Booty - K.C. & The Sunshine Band
2) Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
3) Getaway - Earth, Wind & Fire
4) Get the Funk out Ma Face - Brothers Johnson
5) Give it up - Tyrone Davis
6) Lowdown - Boz Scaggs

When competitive dancers are in a club, they should realize that it is a social environment. In my mind, dance etiquette in a social environment does not allow one to say no to a beginning dancer for any reasons other than coarse behavior or inebriation. To say no because one is preparing for a competition is (to me) a thinly veiled excuse for being a dance snob. Competitive dancers were beginners at one time and should remember that. I believe it is everyone's responsibility, but especially the more experienced dancers, to demonstrate the best manners possible as dictated by proper dance etiquette. If competitive dancers want to practice, rent some floor time in a dance studio. The other benefit to bringing along beginning dancers is that the dance community might get larger. We all know that there is strength in numbers, and we may just reap the benefits such as more accommodating management and DJ's in dance clubs.
I was shocked and amazed to learn that people bring their own drinks (bottled water) into clubs. I always thought club management didn't care for the hustle crowd because we didn't drink alcohol, but it seems they don't care for us because some of us are cheap and rude. Can't blame them for that.
Thanks for allowing me to respond.

This week marks the one year anniversary of the attack on the USA.
A time to reflect back on these tragedies. Our society and way of life have been altered. I will be traveling to Las Vegas this week. Radio station 103.5 FM did a nice thing for our Hustle Community (Florida) by holding a big contest. In the process their legal department weighed in with a few essentials about holding fair contests - be it dance or talent, etc. Judging must be "impartial." The station gathered information that made them take steps to assure the contestants it was going to be fair in the end. "Questionable" judges would get "removed," if not sooner, certainly by the Finals. Some people understood the radio stations moves, some did not. Dancers, please don't confound skills as a dancer, an instructor, or an Event Organizer with the rare ability to "judge" fairly. Contrary to what one thinks, it is not easy to even detach oneself from one's buddies. Relationships such as teacher/student also can weaken the position of judgeship. Mega 103.5 had concerns that the contest results would get challenged under its own rules. There had been people judging linked in some way or another to contestants, and do to the stations own FCC concerns about fair practices, Mega's promotions department deferred to their legal department.
Subsequently Mega 103.5 FM had the Finals judged by "no" Hustle Community
members! This appeared to benefit the winners the most, as they had become
winners with no ties to the judges' panel. All hustle competitions need to be
impartial. Any existing "Buddy System" should be tweaked to assure integrity
in the Hustle Community at large. The West Coast Swing Community has some
very forthright judges; and we could greatly benefit by those examples.
Down here there were some renewed hostilities that occurred over the judging issues. I feel it's always best to bury the hatchet. Though not easy, I have never regretted the times I buried the hatchet. Let go and move on is the best policy!
Merrily wishing the Hustle Community at large to be a place,
"Where The Happy People Go."

Where have all the Dance shows gone?
Back in the 70's & 80's, we were bombarded with high energy (weekly) television dance shows.
*Dick Clark had his famous American Bandstand, *Ed Hurst hosted his TV show from the famous Steel Pier in Atlantic City, *Marty Angelo had the first dance show dedicated to disco music and hustle dancing, *Don Kirshner's Rock Concert had dance segments featuring the Dance Dimensions, *Don Cornelius still has the long running Soul Train, *The Soap Factory, *Soul Alive, *Disco 77 and *Dance Fever had the entire family glued to the TV.
These shows drove dancing to a new stratosphere.
Today, these shows have run their course. Even cable channel TNN (which featured country dancing) has changed to a non-dance format. Public Broadcasting, PBS couldn't raise the viewer funding to air the annual Ballroom Championships.
MTV use to shoot from NY's Palladium and gave the club dance party TRU a shot. Cindy Margolis debuted a dance show from Florida but it had less then a half life.
Has dancing or it's "image" really lost interest and popularity in the USA?
Where have all the dance shows gone?
It would appear to be the perfect time for a new show to emerge. A substantial percentage of today's dance music has a beat which is conducive for WCS, Hustle & Salsa. The right producer could create a dance show featuring a variety of social dancers performing to the music of today. This would require the knowledge of an experienced leader in the business, willing to step up to the plate.
Please visit Marty Angelo's web site. With his past history and experience, he would be an ideal candidate to bring this social art form back to life.

A professional dancer wrote
#1 How do we attract the younger dancers? Well, working at ......., where the music is 150 mph, I can answer.
Seems like whenever I go to a "disco" event, they play classics, but then they slow it down to a crawl. Let's not forget that hustle is the street dance of ballroom. It's made up of all the other standardized dances. Hustle is supposed to be unpredictable, exciting. Duh. It's up to the "established" dancers to keep up with the young kids. We can do what we do to their music, just a little quicker. I'm sorry, maybe we're getting....what's the word...OLD. Where's originality, spontinaty, and just plain old fashioned fun?
#2: The social dancers vs. competition dancers: Competition dancers are professional for the most part and you know what, if you want to dance with me, buy me. After years and years, I've socialized enough. I learned from driving 3 hours to Alexis, standing against a wall for 2 hours, then getting in my car and driving home. Please, if you really want to learn and get better, WATCH. If you like what you see, try it. If the move works, it works. If it doesn't, you'll be doing it in your own original way, which makes it a brand new move. That's the way it works, that's the way it has always worked, and that's the way it will continue to work.
Ok, I feel better now.

Hector Berrios
It's been said, the ultimate goal in life is to get paid to do what you love.
Many dancers, over the years, have left their mark on the hustle. Some of yesterdays greats branched off in various directions. Some have conquered multiple careers.
Hector Berrios did all the above. He took his street dancing to a competitive level then bumped it up a notch to performer. At the top of his game he made a lateral move and ended up playing professional Baseball. Not bad for a guy from the South Bronx.
Literally dancing in the streets and at the youth centers, Hector, as a teenager developed his crafts. Once he came upon the Manhattan club dancers (a more polished style) he was inspired to climb to new levels. After witnessing his first contest he was hooked and motivated to be the best. He began dancing with Debbie Benitiz (sister of world renown producer Jelly Bean Benitiz). Together they began performing with the legendary Latin Symbolics. The Symbolics, under the guidance of George Vascone, picked only the finest dancers. Hector quickly befriended fellow Symbolics Eddie Vega and Lourdes Jones.
As the disco era took stride, Hector was compelled to compete and put his talents to the test. Joining forces with Jacqueline Cruz, they became an incredible hustle team. They took first place at The Boys Club competition defeating Eddie and Lourdes. The judges at the competition were none other then the Disco Dance Dimensions (Billy Fajardo, Sandra Rivera, Frank "Perico" Reyes, Debbie Ferro).
So impressed with Hector & Jacqueline's style and showmanship, they were invited to join the dance troop. The Dance Dimensions would grow to three dance teams.
Jacqueline and Hector would continue to compete (winning first place on the televised show "Soul Alive") but would turn their attention exclusively to the dance company. The troop went on to perform all over the US and abroad. They landed a three year deal with the nationally televised show "Don Kirshner's Rock concert." Each week they would showcase a routine for the millions of viewers at home. The dance troop was booked at the Chateau Madrid when Latin Superstar Tito Pointe came to observe. So impressed with their performance he booked the troop to appear with his Orchestra at Madison Square Garden.
The dance dimensions would soon lose CO-leader Perico and on board came Eddie and Lourdes. The shows and concerts kept coming. But a defining time had come! Many members of the troop, were at a turning point in their lives. Hector wanted to pursue his high school dream. It was time to take his Baseball skills to the next level, college. "Unintentionally, this would pull apart the core and nucleus of this seasoned dance troop." The Dance Dimensions would go on but with new faces.
Hector was recruited to play ball at Oklahoma University. After college he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants but signed with the Kansas City Royals. He played for two years but experienced a minor set back with an arm injury. In 1987 he went to spring try outs with the Detroit Tigers and joined the club for four years.
While playing professional ball, he would still find time to frequent night clubs as he began to focus on Salsa dancing while in Puerto Rico.
In 1992 he retired from Baseball. As quickly as he removed his uniform he was slipping back on his dance shoes. Along with Debbie Benitiz he would perform in the acclaimed motion picture, "Carlitos Way," with Al Pacino and many other area dancers. He followed this up by assisting with the choreography for the movie, "The Cowboy Way."
Long time friend Nelly Cotto, approached Hector and brought him along to perform for a large Salsa concert with Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, and the late Tito Pointe. With his vast knowledge of lifts, tricks and adagio, Hector helped pioneer the use of these skills into Salsa.
Today, Hector is happily married to Claudia Vavela and they have three beautiful daughters. He returned to Baseball in 1997, with the Tigers, but is now with the Toronto Blue Jays, in a coaching roll. It has always been his goal to help and give proper instruction to the younger players. Since Hector is bilingual his communication skills have helped him train and develop new players. But, dancing will always be a big part of his life. He currently partners with Stracy Diaz. Together they perform a hustle routine with "Descarga Latina."
Gratefully for all the opportunities he has had, Hector remembers those days dancing at the "serious dance clubs - The Inferno, Boombamacoa, Latin Times and performing with Liza Minelli and Robert Merrill."
It is rare to see such a talented individual excel in two different skills. Hector looks forward to working with kids and teaching them the fundamentals and mechanics of Baseball. This is one dancer that can still hit one out of the park. I'm sure he's glad the Baseball strike was averted.

Many of the letters share common responses. I guess we're all living and
experiencing similar feelings. Naturally, in the best interests of the readers,
I can only print so many letters.
I hope you enjoy their views.
I'd like to put my two cents in on this issue. I can remember back
in the late 1970's upto say 1981 when the evolution of Hustle had reached
its zenith and it was starting to die out. Hustle had become so technically
advanced that only the best of the best were dancing exclusively with each
other and the beginners/casual
dancers, were left on the side lines watching. The dance had become
so advanced that the beginners/casual dancers were discouraged by the mountain
of knowledge and skill that was required in performing Hustle at such an
advanced level. Most
people wanted to dance like that but they didn't want to put in the effort
perfecting the knowledge and skills required. As a result, they eventually
gave up, walked away, and called Hustle, sour grapes. Hustle basically
evolved itself out of existence.
There were a few people who fell in love with the dance, maintained the passion
and carried the flame for all these years, refusing to let it completely
die out. I feel that R&B Dance, some Hip-Hop and low-tempo Deep
House can still support Hustle
dancing in our Night Clubs today, but most Hard House and Trance music is
just too fast. Young people, properly exposed, will pick up this dance
and continue to perfect it because it's so much fun. When I go out
and Hustle in Night Clubs today, I still have people marveling at the dance
and saying they really want to learn
it, so Hustle still maintains the captivating qualities that it did back
then. For the most part though, if you want to Hustle today you must
attend a major dance competition or a Hustle party at a dance studio.
Still the best dancers, for the most part, are usually only dancing with
others at their skill level. Personally,
I almost never turn down a woman, at any level, who asks me to dance.
I feel it's my obligation to nurture the new dancers and I want to keep Hustle
alive anyway I can. At the same time though I'm constantly on the look
out for a dancer whom I can perfect my skills with, so I tend to ask women
that I perceive to be at a
slightly higher skill level than myself. In that regard things really haven't
changed much. We all need to work hard at perfecting our skills, staying
focused and working our way into the next higher echelon of this dance.
We must all be mindful
that if we put up a "Great Wall of China" around our knowledge and skills
and refuse to share ourselves with those at a lower skill level, these new
dancers will look elsewhere for their dancing enjoyment and Hustle will die
a second death. In any discipline, people at the same skill level usually
flock together, inter-act
and continue to perfect their skills in an effort to move to the next higher
level. The dedicated, who perservere, will eventually become professionals
and be among the best. It's pretty much like sports, the arts, and
social economic groups, Hustle is no
different. If you wanted to learn how to play basketball would you
show up at the court expecting Michael Jordan to ask you to join in on a
pick-up game or be offended if he didn't. I've been turned down by
great dancers, I understand and I just don't bother them again. I've
been around long enough to know the ropes. When
they feel I'm ready, they'll accept. I stay in my place and practice
with those at or near my skill level. We're not at the local club free-styling,
we're practicing an art form. Those ladies who expect to be deludged
by male suiters requesting their
company on the dance floor simply because they paid the price of admission
need to understand the game. We're all there to dance, have fun and
perfect our skills. If you want to dance, go ask that someone you've
got your eye on. If asked, smile, accept the invitation, dance and
have fun. Let's not blame the guys for not
asking every woman in the ballroom. Lately I've been seeing more guys
at the workshops than ladies, so obviously the guys do care and are concerned
with bringing the ladies some dancing satisfaction. Let's all work
together to keep this art form prospering.

EDITORIAL
"Growing the Hustle"
To grow the interest in the Hustle, it starts with YOU. This is a Call
to action.
Years gone by, the hustle dance was supported by contemporary music,
the popularity of the disco era, motion pictures and more. This doesn't
hold true today.
Unfortunately, as soon as someone new is exposed to our dance, two
others drop out? Why?
From the number of letters I receive, there are many reasons but these
are two of the biggest issues:
* Too few male lead dancers, to go around
* Many male, veteran dancers, unwillingness to dance with beginners
or new comers.
It's easy to get caught up, dancing with our long time friends and advanced
dancers. But, we can't lose sight of the fact, "we all started some where."
I've been made aware of the reduction of dancers at events, socials
and night clubs. Naturally, the organizers and teachers will feel this
the most.
How do we reverse this trend?
I encourage our male dancers and professionals to take the time to
get to know the new faces in the crowd. Be patient and encourage them,
not discourage them.
Thanks to Scott M. and Drew A., for your insight and the many others
that have shared their thoughts and experiences.
Here are the qualities that female dancers look for in a good lead
partner.
Gentlemen, Please read and memorize. Be a hero not a zero.
* Friendly, smiling individuals that greet them and ask them to dance.
* Introduce your self, don't limit your conversation to just dancing.
* Don't give dance advice unless it has been solicited.
* Encouraging comments, complimentary remarks. Tell her the things
she is doing right. Don't focus on mistakes.
* Good eye contact.
* Clean neat appearance, well groomed, good hygiene.
* A good lead. Able to stay on time to the music.
* Thank them for the dance. Show your appreciation.
* Take the time to introduce them to other dancers in your circle,
who will make them feel welcomed.
*Give them positive feedback.
If you really enjoy this dance, and are passionate about seeing it grow,
we all need to welcome more dancers into the circle.

"Dance Fever" Part 2 (A look back at the nationally syndicated TV show)
Discotheques were popping up all over. Radio stations adopted the new
dance music formats, nightclubs switched from bands to live DJs and enlarged
their dance floors adorned with mirror balls.
Television had "American Bandstand," "Soul Train," "Don Kirshners's
Rock Concert," "Disco 77." (Soul Alive, Disco Step by Step and The Soap
Factory were regional shows.)
The time was right for a national TV show exposing the new dance phenomenon.
Merv Griffin was quick to capitalize on this opportunity. Utilizing the
concept from his "Thank God It's Friday" premiere show, he would have couples
from all over the country compete weekly on the show.
The production company would travel (initially) to major markets auditioning
couples to appear on the show. With a limited budget, during the first
season, only one couple was selected per city.
In New York, the auditions were held at Regine's Night club. Among
a group of NY's best, Tony & Susan Marolda emerged victorious. They
were the first couple selected to represent the big apple. The show premiered
January 12, 1979. The Dance Fever theme song was created by the group (long
since forgotten) "Triple S Connection."
Susan's red sequin body suit lit up the screen when performing her
memorable one leg cork screw. As one of the first couples to make the broadcast,
Tony & Susan were featured on Dance Fever's weekly introduction.
In Phila, The Library Night Club held their competition. NY native
Ritchie and Stephanie were chosen. They selected the popular "Heaven Knows"
by Donna Summer to catch the judges attention.
Since the show quickly caught on and the ratings stroke gold, the "Dance
Fever" budget grew. For the second season, they would select couples from
additional markets, including abroad. When visiting NY, they would pick
multiple couples from Manhattan and Albany (upstate) NY.
Ricky Quintana and Lee Rafrano dazzled views with their effortless
adagio and Lee's (literally) "nude" costume. Their death sweeps and snake
maneuvers blew the audience away.
Juan and Donna, from DC, performed a wonderfully choreographed routine
to the dance remake of "Light my fire." The TV disc jockey, Freeman King,
would introduce the songs prior to the performance. Juan & Donna's
high energy routine was jazzy & very exciting.
The shows popularity continued to grow. But to avoid stagnation and
grow market share, the producers encouraged other styles of dance. The
show had to expand to avoid type casting. The typical disco routine was
becoming a no no.
New York's Ray Bogart & Mary Fontaine incorporated jazz with leaps
into their Star Wars hustle routine. Wilson Barrera and Margaret Burns,
from Florida, did an interpretive theatrical rumba to "historia de un amor."
Margaret's costume created quite a stir. (There was not much of it.) But
the producers finally gave in and allowed her to wear it. Raye Avery and
first partner Kim Negron, won the citywide contest and went on to represent
Houston on TV. Raye admits, he wasn't prepared for the quality of competition
that he would meet head on in LA.
Lisa Rivera from NY and Steven Mitchell from Phila. drove to DC for
their audition.
This became a common practice. If you missed the opportunity to audition
in your home town or were not selected, many teams ventured out to other
cities to earn the shot for the all expense paid trip to Los Angeles and
a chance to shine on TV.
Dallas rocked with Randy Atlas and partner Wanda Kelly. They selected
a jitterbug swing to "Jailhouse Rock" and performed in authentic prison
style outfits. The routine received high grades and they were rewarded
with wins up to the finals.
On the show, after all four couples performed, the celebrity judges
would read aloud the score they cast for each couple. Barry Durand, and
his ex, from DC, performed a swing dance routine. It appeared they would
be a shoe in until guest judge, Peter Noone (from the 60's rock group "Herman's
Hermits") states (in his British accent) "Well, I don't really know anything
about dancin but they jumped around nicely, I give them an 83"? What seemed
apparent did not materialize. Hey, this is show biz folks.
David Padilla from NY and Donna Boyle from Pa, joined forces and qualified
in two different states to be on TV. Ultimately they would represent Phila.
and make it to the semi finals.
Billy Assmus and Annabelle, from NY, performed a theatrical hustle
to "Pick me up I'll dance." In a signature move, he dramatically grabbed
her in a strangle hold and pulled her across the dance floor. The drama
earned them passage to the semi finals. (To Be
continued)
Stay tuned for "Dance Fever Part 3" - A look at those couples that
progressed to the finals. Denni Terrio leaves and Adrian Zmed enters.
* Feel free to submit your personal experience on "Dance Fever"
to (Rowenlb22@aol.com), we would love to include you.

"NOW U KNOW"
Disco America
Four years ago, Philadelphia hosted its first hustle & salsa dance
event.
Donna Boyle, a native of this historical city, decided, it was way
past due. She put together an exciting celebration in the city of "Brotherly
Love."
But Discoamerica is more than just a competition. It's a Philadelphia
style party.
It's analogous to eating your first Philly Cheese steak: over stuffed,
over the top.
The event has lots of teachers, DJs, dancers (with various backgrounds)
and age groups. Donna never runs an event thin on talent. As one of the
original founders of Hustle USA, she has been around the promotional arena
for some time.
The event has caught a lot of attention over the years. So much that
Television station Nickelodeon will be showing highlights of last year's
footage as well as taping segments of this years event. Last year, Discoamerica
featured TV personality Denni Terrio, the original host of the syndicated
show "Dance Fever." In preparation for Discoamerica, Denni performed
at a Philadelphia Phillies Baseball game and danced with the Philly mascot
before 60,000 fans to help promote Discoamerica.
This years event returns to the Korman suites from June 7- 9, but the
room design will accommodate more dance space. The entire hall will be
wall to wall dance floor and the tables will be removed for maximum use.
The three day event will feature a dinner dance show (Choreographed by
Arte Phillips Saturday evening), a Thursday welcome party at D'angelo's
Restaurant / Club at 20th and Spruce (about 5 blocks from the hotel) starting
about 9pm, out door swimming pool, late night social dancing to high energy
DJ's (Bobby Morales, Nelson "Paradise" Roman, Randy Atlas & Dave Lach
), two dance floors, a farewell party at Rock Lobster under the stars,
plus a list of great instructors & Judges.
For the first time, Jose Gonzales, from Atlantic City will be on the
teaching, judging panel and will be holding his own unique workshops. Jose
has an extensive background including: numerous Casino Dance Shows, performing
on the original Merv Griffin TV show / tribute to the movie "Thank God
It's Friday" and the syndicated TV show "Dance Fever."
In addition, look for other dance greats: Joyce Szili, Elizabeth Darchi,
Billy Fajardo, Arte Phillips, Eleny Fotinos, Brian & Silvana Gallagher,
Paul Pelicoro, Dara Patrusky, Juan Calderon, Jami Josephson & Kenny
Gonzales... Plus more.
I will be the Master of Ceremonies and will perform with Lauren Bess
Saturday evening.
Come on out to Philly, have a cheese steak, (Yo, Adrienne) and experience
the difference. It's going to be HOT.
