Millennium Hustle turns 9

May 22nd will mark the 9 year anniversary of the premier hustle social, that takes place twice a month, in New York City. Kudos to Lori Brizzi and the Millennium Hustle. On Saturday, May 22, the party continues at the 92nd Street Y. As always, there will be a free beginners hustle lesson from 8PM to 9PM taught by none other then Lori herself. Then get ready for 6 non stop hours of dancing with two of the best, DJs Johnny O and Nelson “Paradise” Roman. To celebrate 9 fantastic years there will be a special dance performance by Lori Ann Greenhouse/Kelvin Roche’s Hustle Performance Class. Admission for this special evening of dance is only $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The 1st Millennium Hustle took place in May, 9 years ago. Lori had been working on cruise ships teaching dance but found herself with a terribly broken heart. “I had joined Swing Dance America Dance Company thinking that performing and traveling would be good therapy to help me to heal the pain” explains Lori. “I finished the tour still on the mend so I decided to look for a new dance partner for competitions and shows”. With insight from her ex dance partner/choregrapher Eddie Simon, Lori spoke with Bernard Martinez who was hosting his own Salsa socials. He invited Lori to co host. Together they could share the “Ballroom on Fifth”, Bernard would run the Salsa side and Lori would roll out the hustle. Just returning from a hustle competition, Lori relived those exciting times from her youth. Unable to sleep, “the endorphins were raging and I felt so happy”, she had found the perfect therapy to heal her broken heart. She would integrate new dance music along with the classics of her youth creating a new hustle venue. She would take Bernard up on his offer as she had just witnessed a hustle awakening, choreographed by Arte Phillips and performed by Rob Finocchio and Tiffany Brown. It was a classic hustle danced to fresh new music. This experience reenergized her. To kick off her first social she invited Rob and Tiffany to perform their new routine. To launch the new socials, Lori developed a lead/follow dance contest for amateurs in hustle and salsa. After preliminaries held at Paul Pellicoro’s DanceSport, Stepping Out and Roma Moon’s hustle parties at You Should Be Dancing with the finals held at Millennium Hustle. In addition to contests, Lori has always incorporated a free class prior to the party and through the years had many guest teachers including Billy Fajardo, Billy Marti, Bobbi Petri, Brian Gallagher, Danny McGee, Diane Nardone, Donna Boyle, Doug Hagwood, Susan Fritz…..
When Bernard and his wife decided to move to California, Lori decided to keep the party going on her own. Although the locations have changed, the format has remained the same. Over the years the social has been held at Saint Marks, IL Campanello, 92nd St Y and Club 412. The response has been tremendous and grew from one Saturday a month to as many as three. Always keeping it lively, Lori introduced socials utilizing Three different DJs on a regular basis. “These parties lead me onto to my first dance cruise, Millennium Dance Cruise (with a second one in the planning) and my annual national dance event, the 6th Annual New York Hustle Congress.
Next week’s 9 year anniversary party will also be the kick off party for the 6th Annual New York Hustle Congress. Any one registers for the Congress that night, not only gets the ‘early bird prices’ but an additional Anniversary Discount of 9% as well. Since it is the 6th year of the Congress, an assortment of 6 passes will be given away in a raffle as a way of saying “thank you” for all of the support over the years.
“Thank you everyone for 9 fun years”
A Message From Lori Brizzi
The following day I will be walking in the NAMI walk. Due to a personal family issue that is very close to my heart, this year’s Circle of Love, the Saturday night charity at the New York Hustle Congress will called ‘Hustle for Help’. Sunday’s NAMI walk will be the first in an effort to raise people’s awareness and help fight stigma associated with disorders of the brain, your bodies most important organ.
These illness include:lAutism Spectrum Disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar DisorderBorderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative Disorders, Dual Diagnosis and Integrated Treatment of Mental and Substance Abuse Disorder, Eating Disorders, Major Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Traumatic Stress Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Suicide, Tourette’s Syndrome. 1 in 6 adults and almost 1 in 10 children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. Yet, for many, the stigma associated with the illness, can be as great a challenge as the disease itself. Many people in the dance community have or know a friend or loved one that is suffering in silence from one of these disorders. One of the best ways you can help someone with mental illness is by understanding what it is – and what it isn’t. After all, myths about mental illnesses contribute to stigma, which often prevents those who are living with it from seeking help. Most importantly, mental illnesses are treatable through medication and psychosocial therapies – allowing those who suffer from them the opportunity to lead full and productive lives. Please join and walk with me on Team ‘BringChange2Mind’, an organization started by Glenn Close to help fight against stigma when her sister was diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder. http://www.bringchange2mind.org/ It is a nice walk along Jones Beach! Please join me! If you cannot walk, please sponsor since NAMI is a terrific organization that does so many things to help those and their family members who struggle with these illnesses and they put the money to very good use. Here is the link to my page: http://www.nami.org/walkTemplate.cfm?section=NAMIWALKS&template=/customsource/namiwalks/teampage.cfm&teamID=21093
Thank you!

A Special Note to all Dancetalk Readers;
Some of you ask why are there two events of hustle on the same weekend? Due to circumstances out of our control, the Hustle has always been under the umbrella of the Salsa Congress created by David Melendez (May he RIP!) It was his dream to always have the hustle and salsa together and we are dedicating our 10th year to have his dream come true. Those of you who knew David will know that! Due to our overflow of 20,000 attendee’s we needed to not only expand but offer Hustle and Salsa and Bachata all under one roof and one pass to all our guests of which we could not do before. We felt it important to help Hustle dancing grow, and to expose this dance to our large salsa community and our large international audience.

Hi Ron, Its great how you keep us updated on all the dance info and those people who wrote the music from back in the day and today. You mentioned Georgio Moroders birthday and his accomplishments with Donna Summer etc… Not sure if you know but he also wrote the theme for Flashdance – the movie and received three academy awards for his music in three Grammy awards for motion pictures. I also read that he worked with many other artists including the Three Degrees.
Hope this helps,
Sonny

Thank you for putting this in your newsletter ( Disco Dance Dimensions, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z19AbQBclPo , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vTFfWYsbP0). Please send special thanks to the person who posted these rare videos.

Good morning Ron,
I wanted to vent my confusion over the hustle and your editorial last week. I do love the hustle but with a full time job and part time teaching assistant position I have limited time to do much other then sleep, eat and pay bills. I do try to attend one or two dance parties a month but it has been a challenge. I did attend the Hustle Congress last year in NYC. Now, help me out, why would another organization hold an event on the same weekend. That seems to be unfair and counter productive for the growth of the hustle? Whats up with that? I wanted to also wish a happy belated birthday to Sonya – La Luna dance studio and congratulation to Lisa Nunziella for her involvement with the hustle hall of fame.
Thank you,
Audrey Bay – Livingston, NJ

Hi Ron,
I am not a member of the I.H.D.A. but will seriously investigate joining. I had attended one of their parties at MadJam a few years ago when Arty Phillips was the president. It was a fun meeting and there was an interesting dance lesson taught for free. Arty brought lots of fun to the party. What I wanted to see now is how the new president handles things. As you had written in your editorial – there is lots of opportunities to grow the hustle. I do think you left out the word “Inclusion”. The hustle has to include everyone. Some dancers get labeled or marked as not dancing or conforming to the current “hustle style”. Everyone should be invited to join the hustle in my view, young and old. Lets hope that the new president can lead and speak out against people that hurt or slow down the growth of the hustle. Another area that I would like to see addressed is the cost of hustle lessons. I would like to see the price of lessons for younger dancers become more affordable. The economy being what it is, nobody in college can afford the current rate for lessons. I look forward to seeing you at Disco America this summer. Thanks for everything you do.

Hi Ron,
Lori Ann’s performance group kicked off Wed night at Stepping Out. I was lucky that my partner from last year recorded the event. There were 14 couples broken up into 4 rows (your view is of right side). http://picasaweb.google.com/itwirl.round/Movies?authkey=Gv1sRgCMvF9KH8j-S7UQ&feat=email#5462987767885854882
Great credit goes to Lori Ann Greenhouse and Kelvin Roche, for getting us on stage in less than 3 months time in addition to Lori Ann’s “super duper” choreography. Here’s a great write-up, very supportive of the hustle scene, summing up the entire evening at SO http://www.a-dance-cafe.com/2010/04/stepping-out-hustle.html

Hey Ron, I wanted to jump in on the topic of holding two events on the same weekend, on the same month in the same city? Holly S%@*. you gotta be kidding me. Hey John Lindo, Mark James, Lou Delprete, Donna Des., Diane Nardone, Eric Novoa, Simone Assb… how would you feel if someone held a event on the same weekend as you? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Why are you listing this Ron? Has anyone asked Lori Brizzi how she feels about this? I feel like I’m getting to old for this childish behavior. Does anyone have some answers, does anyone have any morals or compassion for fellow organizers. I thought we were trying to build up the hustle community not tear it down. Give me a break.

April 21 – Craig update

Good news Mark

I am taking Craig out on Sunday. I told him lets just go for a ride get out of the house and he agreed.
I thought maybe the beach somewhere , where the fresh air is great and he doesn’t have to go walking.
I went to visit him on Monday after work and he was walking with a cane and doing great. I am hoping he will go to a dance soon ,but, he said he wasn’t ready for that. He is calling people and accepting more visitors.
I am excited just to take him for a ride without a destination. If we do not get back then I will send and SOS lol.

It was good to see him in an upbeat mood and I did want to pass that on

The Classic Disco Nightclub Reunion

Dominick Lauriano, of DL Music Productions, presents The Classic Disco Nightclub Reunion. Along with a night full of dancing and music you will be entertained for hours. Casablanca recording artist D.C. LaRue joins the line up performing “Cathedrals” & “Let Them Dance” giving the Classic Disco Nightclub Reunion 10 total performers. A must attend show featuring, 1 dance act and 9 music acts. Dominick has deep roots in the music industry. He has always loved music. As a baby, his mother would put him in his playpen while filling the air with music for hours. He was enriched with the sounds of music from birth. At 16 he started attending night clubs. He was intrigued by the DJ’s “blending in” the next song. ” I wondered, how the hell did he do that.” One night after he turned only 17 he went dancing at a club in Levittown, NY, called “Feathers”. Don Scaturro (DJ Scat) was DJ’ing and mixed “You’ll Never Find” into “When Love Is New.” So impressed, Dominick went up to the DJ booth to ask how he did that. “Scat did a few more mixes showing me and explaining to me how it was done and asked me if I wanted to give it a try” explains Dominick. “Devil’s Gun was playing and he showed me how to cue in the next song and when I should start the mix. So at the bass break I let the next song go and “Risky Changes” started blending in without missing a beat.” This lead to Dominick DJ’ing at Feathers night club on Sunday, Monday & Tuesdays. After the lose of some of his hearing, he decided it was time to move on. But music was always in his blood and for many years he has dreamed and anticipated putting together a Disco show with multiple performers. “So I decided that with the club availability being so limited, unlike 20+ years ago, I would put together a “Classic Disco Nightclub Reunion”, explains Dominick. “My concept was to get people that have hung out in such clubs as Uncle Sam’s, Feathers, Penrods, Decameron, etc; to get together years later for a reunion. A reunion which will be a “concert in a nightclub atmosphere”, dancing all night long on a 1,000 square foot dance floor with 6 DJ’s from back in the Classic Disco era. (DJ Scat (Feather’s, Poor Peter’s, Anvine’s), DJ Pooch (Night Gallery), DJ Steve, (Zachary’s), DJ Louie (Savannah’s, Lemon Tree), DJ Al (Chaz) & me, DJ Dominick (Feathers, Cherry’s Adam’s Apple). With great due diligence, he did his homework and obtained some of the top performers contacts & booked a 10 act show which will feature Carol Williams, Carol Douglas, Rochelle Fleming (1st Choice), D.C. LaRue, Musique, Randy Jones (Village People), France Joli, Harold Melvin’s Bluenotes & The Trammps, along with a hustle dance performance by Louie & Maryann Rosa. The show will be MC’ed by WKTU’s Goumba Johnny. The response & ticket sales have been so overwhelming that he is already booking another show for early December 2010, and will expand this to a road show/tour. The Classic Disco Nightclub Reunion will be popping up all over the country. “I am looking into doing shows in the following cities, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, back to New York, Boston & Connecticut, the another show in New York before heading to the West Coast doing shows in Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco & a “Mega-Show in Las Vegas on New Years Eve, 2012. “I am also tentatively planning a Free Style show for October with a tentative line up of Judy Torres, George Lamond, Lisa Lisa, Shannon, TKA & Rob Bass.” Don’t miss out on this blast from the past with the excitement of a concert and dance party all under one roof. For more details visit, www.ClassicDiscoNightclubReunion.com or call 516-506-5060
“I hope to see some of you at my show(s) & let’s keep Disco alive the way we have for the past 25+ years.
Musically Yours Forever, Dominick.

Editorial “Where Do We Go From Here”

The Hustle, the baby of all social dances, must gain momentum to maintain relevance.
2010 brings new ideas with new opportunities. Last year we engaged in the first open forum to share and recommend how to expand and grow the hustle. Numerous ideas were exchanged. The gathering initiated and inspired others to implement some of these suggestions. There is a growing understanding of the importance of solving “the missing youth” factor. We must continue to search for the cures, exploring even the most provocative views. If you love this dance then get off the side lines and get involved. You can help make change, take place. Start by attending more events. Encourage your friends to come out and introduce non-dancers to the community. The hustle has morphed over the years, as the dance has evolved, we too must acclimate and help the dance live on for future generations. It is paramount that we take action today. We need to continue to exchange ideas to avoid the hustle ending up in moth balls in the Smithsonian Institute.
Going forward, the IHDA has elected a new president. Danny McGee has spoken of incorporating 2 speeds of music for the hustle competitions. His leadership can help shape the direction of the hustle. The hustle most embrace dancers from other styles of dance as well. Let Latin, Swing and ballroom dancers experience the magic of the hustle. This will require the professionals, organizers, studio owners, DJs – from across the country to engage in more communication. Another major area of concern is the music selection and lack of contemporary songs utilized in the hustle, (swing implements current music). In the past, DJs were an essential part of breaking new releases. Some songs were heard exclusively in the clubs — only.
For fresh new tunes, dancers were drawn to the discotheques. This excitement should be recultivated by our DJ’s.
Teaching the dance requires knowledge and a fundamental guide. The New York style hustle has an official syllabus. Other forms of the hustle should also create and develop a syllabus to be shared and accepted.
The growth of the hustle is not a fast fix item. It will continue to be a work in progress. We must all shoulder the responsibility and continue to work at it. The hustle is not only fun and invigorating but it is a beautiful dance to observe. If everyone makes an effort, as a community, we can continue to grow our dance for future generations. This will require more talk and more action.

Remembrance from Tony Pace

What attracts us to one another are the things we see in others that we see in ourselves.
Two years ago on Good Friday, Gladys Torres passed. The words “have a good day” didn’t seem to apply. Yet, Gladys saw in her life, the spirit and the will to make every day a blessed one. She saw in us a beauty, and energy, a potential, and a greatness we didn’t even see in ourselves. Her faith in Jesus and her spirituality made her transcend her own selflessness, and made all our days good. She would praise Jesus every day. “Thank you, Jesus” was her reply to all. We admired her, we connected with her, we loved her. You don’t just have a good day, TODAY IS A GOOD DAY! My thoughts and sentiments go out to the Rick, and theTorres Family.
It’s a good day.
Tony Pace
