Millennium Hustle turns 9
May 22nd will mark the 9 year anniversary of the premier hustle social, that takes place twice a month, in New York City. Kudos to Lori Brizzi and the Millennium Hustle. On Saturday, May 22, the party continues at the 92nd Street Y. As always, there will be a free beginners hustle lesson from 8PM to 9PM taught by none other then Lori herself. Then get ready for 6 non stop hours of dancing with two of the best, DJs Johnny O and Nelson “Paradise” Roman. To celebrate 9 fantastic years there will be a special dance performance by Lori Ann Greenhouse/Kelvin Roche’s Hustle Performance Class. Admission for this special evening of dance is only $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The 1st Millennium Hustle took place in May, 9 years ago. Lori had been working on cruise ships teaching dance but found herself with a terribly broken heart. “I had joined Swing Dance America Dance Company thinking that performing and traveling would be good therapy to help me to heal the pain” explains Lori. “I finished the tour still on the mend so I decided to look for a new dance partner for competitions and shows”. With insight from her ex dance partner/choregrapher Eddie Simon, Lori spoke with Bernard Martinez who was hosting his own Salsa socials. He invited Lori to co host. Together they could share the “Ballroom on Fifth”, Bernard would run the Salsa side and Lori would roll out the hustle. Just returning from a hustle competition, Lori relived those exciting times from her youth. Unable to sleep, “the endorphins were raging and I felt so happy”, she had found the perfect therapy to heal her broken heart. She would integrate new dance music along with the classics of her youth creating a new hustle venue. She would take Bernard up on his offer as she had just witnessed a hustle awakening, choreographed by Arte Phillips and performed by Rob Finocchio and Tiffany Brown. It was a classic hustle danced to fresh new music. This experience reenergized her. To kick off her first social she invited Rob and Tiffany to perform their new routine. To launch the new socials, Lori developed a lead/follow dance contest for amateurs in hustle and salsa. After preliminaries held at Paul Pellicoro’s DanceSport, Stepping Out and Roma Moon’s hustle parties at You Should Be Dancing with the finals held at Millennium Hustle. In addition to contests, Lori has always incorporated a free class prior to the party and through the years had many guest teachers including Billy Fajardo, Billy Marti, Bobbi Petri, Brian Gallagher, Danny McGee, Diane Nardone, Donna Boyle, Doug Hagwood, Susan Fritz…..
When Bernard and his wife decided to move to California, Lori decided to keep the party going on her own. Although the locations have changed, the format has remained the same. Over the years the social has been held at Saint Marks, IL Campanello, 92nd St Y and Club 412. The response has been tremendous and grew from one Saturday a month to as many as three. Always keeping it lively, Lori introduced socials utilizing Three different DJs on a regular basis. “These parties lead me onto to my first dance cruise, Millennium Dance Cruise (with a second one in the planning) and my annual national dance event, the 6th Annual New York Hustle Congress.
Next week’s 9 year anniversary party will also be the kick off party for the 6th Annual New York Hustle Congress. Any one registers for the Congress that night, not only gets the ‘early bird prices’ but an additional Anniversary Discount of 9% as well. Since it is the 6th year of the Congress, an assortment of 6 passes will be given away in a raffle as a way of saying “thank you” for all of the support over the years.
“Thank you everyone for 9 fun years”
A Message From Lori Brizzi
The following day I will be walking in the NAMI walk. Due to a personal family issue that is very close to my heart, this year’s Circle of Love, the Saturday night charity at the New York Hustle Congress will called ‘Hustle for Help’. Sunday’s NAMI walk will be the first in an effort to raise people’s awareness and help fight stigma associated with disorders of the brain, your bodies most important organ.
These illness include:lAutism Spectrum Disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar DisorderBorderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative Disorders, Dual Diagnosis and Integrated Treatment of Mental and Substance Abuse Disorder, Eating Disorders, Major Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Traumatic Stress Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Suicide, Tourette’s Syndrome. 1 in 6 adults and almost 1 in 10 children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. Yet, for many, the stigma associated with the illness, can be as great a challenge as the disease itself. Many people in the dance community have or know a friend or loved one that is suffering in silence from one of these disorders. One of the best ways you can help someone with mental illness is by understanding what it is – and what it isn’t. After all, myths about mental illnesses contribute to stigma, which often prevents those who are living with it from seeking help. Most importantly, mental illnesses are treatable through medication and psychosocial therapies – allowing those who suffer from them the opportunity to lead full and productive lives. Please join and walk with me on Team ‘BringChange2Mind’, an organization started by Glenn Close to help fight against stigma when her sister was diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder. http://www.bringchange2mind.org/ It is a nice walk along Jones Beach! Please join me! If you cannot walk, please sponsor since NAMI is a terrific organization that does so many things to help those and their family members who struggle with these illnesses and they put the money to very good use. Thank you!
