Letters to the Editor

(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

As listed in Dance Trivia, “the hustle was born in the early 70’s but to many folks surprise, it keeps rolling on today.” To me, being a social dancer, that is the problem. I think the best way to increase the visibility of hustle is get it back in clubs. Hustle, it not just for competions anymore. That is why I am supporting David Flynn for President. He wants to build a bigger tent and expand, not tear down, what exists and already works fine. He wants give increased opportunities for young dancer and not so young dancers who don’t know hustle still exists both socially and competitively. Maybe if people see it, they will want to learn and take a class and bring their friends and the more people, the more likely a place would consider a hustle night. David offers change we can believe in.

Hi Ron,
I have danced the hustle from 1979 to 1984, got married and had 2 kids then returned in 1999 and haven’t stopped since. I am not familiar with the IHDA???? I see that there are some candidates running for the presidency but I know nothing about this society. Could someone help educate us about them? Where do they office out of? Is this a new group? I feel like I know a ton of dancers yet I haven’t heard about the IHDA?
Please help fill in the blanks.
Thank you,
Joy Glass

I am writing in support of David Flynn for president. I have known David since the summer, and I am a member of his dance team and am hoping to either compete or perform with him in a showcase in the future. He has been teaching the team swing, salsa, and hustle and I can say from personal experience that he is an excellent teacher. I have the most experience with hustle and I really enjoy going out to the clubs and being able to dance hustle to club music and I am looking forward to learning more from David.
Thank you,
Jessie

Reference David Flynn for President of I D H A
. I have know David Flynn for over 25 years. I taught him how to dance the sling hustle back in the mid 80’s.. He is now organizing and teaching the upper 20 to lower 36 young adults groups with much success. He is a very intelligent, accomplished dancer and teacher, having won most of the competitions he has participated in and in addition, is very popular with the generation he is teaching. He now has a dance team and is successful with them. I support David for president because I believe in his ideas of sling hustle style of dancing as it can accommodate to all speeds of dancing and is easier to teach than the current new york style of hustle, which I particularly do not like. I have grown up with every hustle that has come down from new york and the present new york style is not very applicable to higher speeds of music. I also believe in David’s ability to articulate his vision of dancing for all, bringing in the younger generation, which is so important to keep the hustle movement alive. I also think David’s ideas regarding teaching are superior, and he is very adapt at teaching both young and old dancers. He can articulate and demonstrate the easy and more complicated dancing moves and is very good with those that are new to the art as well as those who are excellent dancers. I have known most of his partners, and several of them are still active in dancing and contribute to his dance team on a regular basis, which is remarkable in that they are remaining in contact with him eventhough they dont dance with him in a partnership way. This says something of David’s demeanor, intelligence and overall personality. His older dance partners and friends regularly contribute to his dance team which shows inclusion of all ages. I certainly enjoy his friendship and revele in his knowledge about dancing and his attempts to get others to incorporate some of his ideas into the dancing repertoire. Most of the dances that I go to regarding hustle, are attended mostly by people in their late 30’s and up. We need to get the younger generation involved and I think the best way is with inclusion of sling hustle as part of dancing repertoire. David is very involved with the younger generation, and they seem to thrive in his dance community. This is what hustle needs. And I think that inclusion of sling is important as I believe it is easier to teach than the new york style. David would make an outstanding leader and would appeal to all generations of hustle dancers.
Respectfully submitted
Steve Russell
